UK Achieves 1.5 Million Small-Scale Solar Installations
The UK has now surpassed 1.5 million MCS-certified solar PV installations since records began in 2008. The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is the UK’s quality mark for small-scale renewable energy systems, certifying installations that provide renewable energy for homes and small businesses. These certifications cover solar installations with a maximum DC output of 50 kilowatts, distinguishing them from commercial-scale systems. A typical household rooftop system has a capacity of 3-4 kW.
Chris Hewett, Chief Executive of Solar Energy UK, commented on this achievement, saying, “Congratulations to MCS for reaching this important milestone. The fact that 500,000 of these installations have been carried out since the end of subsidies in 2019 shows that consumer demand for clean energy is stronger than ever. Solar Energy UK is proud to work alongside the organisation to drive the industry forward and maintain high standards.”
With the current pace of installations, it is expected that the UK will reach a total of two million installations within the next three years. Ian Rippin, MCS Chief Executive, expressed pride in reaching this milestone, stating, “This milestone mirrors the growing demand amongst homeowners to generate home-grown electricity – reducing energy bills, claiming energy independence, and decreasing their carbon footprint.”
